Dabke in Gaza

Dabke in Gaza

The little girl led them so lightly
Through the devastated streets of the city,
Where the bodies still lay buried.

Under a sky which had lifted
She swirl-twirled the dabke,
The keffiyehed men following her.

Past the blitzed buildings ,
Homes, hospitals, shops , schools –
She stepped gracefully, hair winging.

It was a dance of celebration,
At last the peace and ceasefire,
At last no soldiers of the Occupation.

She danced for the future
And a city growing again,
An orchard of oranges for picking.

Her smile from river to ocean,
The men joined in unison,
Kicking dust as she moved on.
