War diaries

PART ONE
23 June 2025

Airless. Can’t sleep. New neighbours got a house party.
Bullshit south London neo-prog and wispy folk soundtrack.
The semi-guilty theme music of middle-class carpetbaggers.
Gentrifiers’ chinos too tight to risk playing a dance tune. If they play that
New Pulp single one more time I’ll cut their fuckin lecky off.

Cuz back in hospital again. Agonised, skull pushed back against
NHS wipe-clean pillow. Hepatocellular carcinoma at 42.
Don’t do drugs, kids. But who could survive a life like this
Without them? Summer sky hanging grey with warm rain.

Suze wanderin from wall to wall in St Mary’s Road
Drinkin the dregs of tins left over from last night.
Hands shaking from the comedown, eyes scared,
Sideways glancing, panicked at the shit the day holds.

PART TWO
24 June 2025

If resistance changed anything, they’d criminalise it….
Starmer wants to make rage a thought crime.
Let the grown-ups deal with genocide,
With jet parts , reconnaissance flights and reprimands.
Ned Ludd’s face was a ghostly white and his wives
Were of all genders. The machinery of state
Is like any machine. Can be halted with a hammer.

Remember when Ukraine was a war for self-determination
Until it became a three-way carve up between
Trump, the EU and Russia over the right to rare earth mining?
Now Trump ends great-power competition
With a show of his Massive Ordnance Penetrators
And Iran will be made great again
By firing cruise missiles at its prisons.
Hypocrites, mercenaries and war-profiteers;
The unmasked face of Capital. And it’s
No more than coincidence
That Iran just started rare earth production
In Abbas Abad Industrial Town.

If war is the health of the state, we can
Be the means of its assisted dying.
Cuz just threw up in a plastic tray;
His consultant drives a Lambo Countach
With a personalised 999 number plate.
All forms of the state are states of war
From those that mask as diplomacy
To those that manage welfare.
