Mural of Marwan Barghouti

By Nick Moss

Here [in this city] dwells Eunomia (Good Governance) and that unsullied fountain Dice (Justice), her sister, sure support of cities; and Eirene (Peace) of the same kin, who are the stewards of wealth for mankind – three glorious daughters of wise-counselled Themis. – Pindar, Olympian Ode 13

Peace comes as /childbirth in the dust on a dirt road/wheat flour bags spoiling in a warehouse / dawn raids in the West Bank/135 corpses-handcuffed-mutilated-close-range killshots /peace comes as / 70 dumas of land seized in Nablus/ bombs on Gaza-Khan Yunis –Rafah/ 97 dead so far in this ceasefire

Brethren / rejoice / be made complete / be comforted / be like-minded / for these are but / casualties of peace.

Eirene / armed collaborator gangs / 57,000 orphans / “they’re going to be very good / they’re going to behave / they’re going to be nice / we’re going to eradicate them if we have to”

Eunomia / Trump / Blair / A “Board of Peace” / Emiratis / Saudis / Egyptians / Jordanians / Qataris / Palestine / as vassal real estate.

Dice / Marwan Barghouti / Ahmad Saadat / Abbas al-Sayed / Hassan Salameh / beaten with iron rods / rotting in jail cells.

NOTES

The “four aces” – the leading political prisoners Israel so far refuses to release:

Marwan Barghouti – currently the most popular Palestinian political figure, according to many polls. Elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996, accused by Israel of organising the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, the armed wing of Fatah. Jailed for life on charges he denies.

Ahmad Saadat – general secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 2008, he was sentenced to 30 years, charged with terrorism and responsibility for attacks carried out by PFLP members. He has frequently been held in solitary confinement and has launched several hunger strikes whilst in custody.

Abbas al-Sayed – has been held in Israeli prisons for over 23 years. Born in Tulkarm in the West Bank in 1966, he became a prominent figure in Hamas’s armed wing in the 1990s. He was imprisoned in May 2002 and later sentenced by an Israeli court to 35 life sentences and an additional 100 years in prison. During his imprisonment, he led hunger strikes and was seen as a key organiser among Palestinian prisoners. Since October 2023, he has been held in solitary confinement, and Palestinian prisoner groups say he has been subjected to beatings and medical neglect.

Hassan Salameh – born in the Khan Younis refugee camp in southern Gaza in 1971, he became involved in Palestinian resistance movements after the outbreak of the First Intifada in 1987. He became a leading figure in the al-Qassam Brigades, and in 1996 was convicted by Israel of orchestrating a number of suicide bombings. He was sentenced to 48 life terms in prison.

Adameer – ADDAMEER (Arabic for conscience) Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association is a Palestinian non-governmental, civil institution that works to support Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli and Palestinian prisons. Established in 1991 by a group of activists interested in human rights, the centre offers free legal aid to political prisoners, advocates their rights at the national and international level, and works to end torture and other violations of prisoners’ rights through monitoring, legal procedures and solidarity campaigns.
