Christian England by Gilbert and George
By Gregory Dalrymple-White
All this used to be fields
that spread
yields that fed
people
who gave ambition
to a system
abused
all of this used to be so much better
than a street
that repeats across
concrete heaths
and that flag
wankers
reclaim
did all this used to be so much more?
or just a door
to see red-tinted visions that passed
like a slow train replacement bus
the boring complaints
joyously claimed
And yet all of this reclaimed
from before
from churches
who made sure
a message dismounted,
palmed off,
from one that beggars called friend
who adored Magdalene
no less
impressed in stone structures
cold comfort
what a space
to reclaim
whilst dog collar dogmatics
spoil gospel
reframe!
for is it not the case?
that all of this used to be so much less
before we sat here
together.
In this place
that used to be fields.
