Protest against the far-right, London, March 2026. Commons image
By Owen Gallagher
Tomorrow
we may hear an anthem,
boots on the street,
see banners hung,
and find that a neighbour
has become a stranger.
Tomorrow
someone may knock
and know our names,
we may lower our eyes
and still our tongues.
Tomorrow
we may swear an oath,
wear a uniform, load a gun,
herd people into trucks.
Tomorrow
there may be no singing,
playgrounds may be empty.
Tomorrow
may not belong to us.
