The Crystal Maze

The Crystal Maze

by Declan Geraghty

The money

circulates

within the rich

blowing around a glass cage

circulating

like the final challenge

on the crystal Maze

it never leaves the cage

it never leaves the rich

the money is in the ring

a group of two guys and three women in matching tracksuits

grab at money blowing around, in the air

demented

in the end they leave with nothing

after deductions

some leave in arrears

the money is in the ring

they say go cashless

until you pay a ten percent charge

on a fifty euro gift to your kid

or a helping hand to a brother abroad

only for a twenty percent charge

on foreign transactions

I’m afraid to ask for loans

no interest in the interest

the money is in the ring

blowing

around and around

a fifty foot tall Richard O’Brien

looks back at me

but its not Richard

its something else

its just the Crystal Maze

of capitalism

it never leaves the glass cage

the money is in the ring.
