By Rob Walton
On January 26th John Logie Baird shows folk
this contraption which could be used to show
lock-outs/brutality/the dangers of short-sight
but ends up being used to show shit shows
of one kind or another.
On March 26th the Grand National is run
on the sort of good to firm ground
pitmen deserve to walk on.
In April Bolton Wanderers beat Man City
1-0 in the Cup Final
the month before another result
leaves the wrong side throwing their hats in the air.
On December 3rd Agatha Christie disappears
from her home and Stanley Baldwin
knows nothing about it
or indeed anything else.
This poem is one of the many from the new poetry anthology Shoulder to Shoulder: Poems to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1926 General Strike read the foreword by Sharon Graham here.
