CHURCH AND STATE

By Nick Moss

I keep hearing people tell me Leo IV
(Robert Francis Prevost )
The woke Pope
Is some kind of socialist.
And the new Archbishop of Canterbury
Sarah Mullally is a feminist .
It’s as if Peter Maurin was
Suddenly writing all of
The Pontifical messages
Apparently.

Yesterday the US sank the Iranian frigate
Iris Dena, off the coast of Sri Lanka
Killing 87. The Indian Ocean
Is quite a long way from Iran;
The Iris Dena not engaged
In hostile action towards Trump’s
“Great Armada”. But, to quote
Pete Hegseth, America’s Tyr,
God of War and Martial Valour,
The US isn’t bound by any
“Stupid rules of engagement.”

So. Debris. Seas aflame.
Bodies adrift. Dead schoolkids.
Inconvenienced influencers.
Crusader tattoos.
All part of God’s divine plan.
Apparently.
And President Trump has been
Anointed by Jesus
To light the signal fire in Iran
To cause Armageddon
And mark His return to Earth.
So US troops are told.

I know Peter Maurin said
Of World War One
That a commercial war
Had to be idealized,
So it was called instead
A War for Democracy.
And the price of oil keeps rising.

I keep remembering that for Sarah Mullally
The waste of human life matters,
Because she opposes the Assisted Dying Bill.
I keep remembering that the waste of human life
Matters to Robert Francis Prevost
Because he told the anti-abortionists
At the 2026 March for Life in Washington
That the protection of the right to life
Constitutes the indispensable foundation
Of every other human right.
Apparently.
I guess that’s what they mean by
Papal bull. Robed-up tormentors
Of women and of the terminally ill.

As Washington stages
Its “End Times” Crusade
And the troops depart
Pro cruce transmarina
These vocal “right to lifers”
In their vestments of heaven
Their zucchettos and ferulas
Their copes and their mitres
Seem unable to utter
“Not my God!”
